Born into old money, Lily Ayres lives at Waverly, her family’s estate situated at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Paris, Virginia. She is a strange, small, almost mute, young woman who has no idea that her father has given her to the Vampire King Krieger. Walter Ayres is the King’s Keeper and part of a secret society of historians who unearth, preserve, and attempt to understand relics of long forgotten civilizations.

Lily has never felt comfortable in the human world, but after she suspiciously falls down a flight of stone steps, and is healed and claimed by Krieger, she realizes there is another world. In this Other Realm she feels a sense of belonging, and begins to untwine the mysterious event which left her mentally and psychologically damaged. When Walter disappears in England, Lily works with human and supernatural beings to uncover his whereabouts. With each new discovery, she is pulled deeper into the vortex of magic, intrigue, and dark desires that permeates the supernatural world. The revelations revealed unfold a story of deception and betrayal that threaten to tear the thin veil between the supernatural and human world asunder.

How would you feel if you ended up in a world that you didn’t even know existed?  On top of that, you felt more comfortable there?  Lily Ayres is going through just that.  She has been practically alone all of her life, with her father leaving on trips frequently.  Then one day, she ends up with Krieger, the Vampire King.  That is the doing of her father, Walter Ayres.  He was the last in a long line of Keepers for the Vampire King.  He went to Krieger and asked him to take Lily as his and protect her.  He was sick and knew he was dying, but he had one more mission that the Elder had requested of him.

When he is found brutally murdered, it comes to light that it wasn’t the Elder who requested him to go to England, but someone else.  Only they don’t know who.  They bring in human detective, Dale Hunter, to help them figure this mystery out.  With his help and others in her “new” world, Lily set out to discover who killed her father and why.  Detective Hunter stays behind in America to help Lily and the others.  They discover that Walter left them clues.  Clues only Lilly might be able to decipher as she has been playing this game with Walter her entire life.  Will Lily find out who killed her father and why?  What will happen between Lily and Krieger?  Why is Lily described as "special?"

I have been a little burned out on paranormal books.  It seems like there for a while, they were what were popular.  I had hesitations when I first started this book thinking that it was going to be like the many books that I have read before.  I was wrong.  I really liked this book.  Yes, it has vampires in it, but it isn’t your normal vampire book.  I like that Lily wasn’t a strong character at the beginning of the book.  It made you more sympathetic to her.   The strength in Lily changes throughout the book as more things happen.  I’m not sure about Detective Hunter.  Not that there is anything bad about him, just he is a little quirky to me.  It is interesting and humorous to read what he is thinking.  Overall, this is a good read.

Rebecca Trogner lives in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, and frequently crosses the Blue Ridge Mountains that were the inspiration for Krieger’s home. She always dreamed of being a writer, but got sidetracked by the day-to-day adventures of life. With the encouragement of her family, she has finished her first novel and is currently writing the next book in The Last Keeper’s Daughter series.
