The Hunger Games Contest part 2

Now that the movie is out, I want to hear your opinions of it.  When the movie first started, I wasn't too impressed with the cinematography and thought that the camera was all over the place.  After that first scene, it got MUCH better.  I won't spoil the movie for anyone, but there were a couple of instances where I wasn't sure if that was in the book or not.  This is always a fear when they adapt a film from a book, but I thought the additions were wonderful in the movie.  These being the point of views from characters other than Katniss.  I have only seen this movie once and must see it again.  I have had to re-read the books as a result of watching the movie.

To celebrate the movie, I am having another contest.  In this one, I want to hear what your thoughts on the movie were and how they compared to the books.  I didn't make that a requirement of this contest because I know some people don't like to comment on blogs.

I am giving away: 1 collector's edition of The Hunger Games, 2 paperback copies of The Hunger Games with bookmarks, mockinjay tattoos and mockingjay pins and 1 paperback copy of The Hunger Games.  The collector's edition, bookmarks, tattoos and pins were all donated by Scholastic Books.

  • You will have 48 hours to respond or you will forfeit your prize.
  •  I reserve the right to cancel the contest at any time without reason.
  •  I am not responsible for parcels lost or damaged in the postal system.  I will make every attempt to avoid this.
  • You must be 13 years or older to participate.

The Hunger Games: District 13

District 13 is a district of Panem that was supposedly destroyed by the Capitol during the first rebellion. It is said to be uninhabitable, the ruins still smoldering from the toxic bombs dropped on it. However, the district actually agreed to pretend to be dead in exchange for the Capitol leaving them alone. Its industries were mining graphite and nuclear science/technology. This is the reason that the Capitol agreed to leave them alone.

District 13's leader is President Coin. It is unclear where District 13 is located. Mockingjay gives a hint that it is under the ruins of Washington D.C.

You learn more about District 13 in Catching Fire and  Mockingjay.

Guest Post: The Hunger Games

"I was killed in the 63rd Hunger Games by being stung by a swarm of tracker jackers."

"I was killed by thinking it was okay to stroke a snake."

Tracker jackers?  Stroking snakes?  What in the world's going on?

When tweets like these appeared in my twitter stream, my eyebrows nearly reached my hairline.

Thankfully, a couple of twitter friends introduced me to a sweet new site; HungerNames.com

For fans of The Hunger Games, it gives readers an identity in the THG world.  The minute you visit the URL, you're treated to your own Hunger Games name, the year you participated, and your fate.

This is what I received:

After an initial name is given, readers can click for more names/fates by clicking "Change your name."

That's all there is to it. It's a simple idea, and the fates range from silly to serious.

I'm curious if the site spits out any winners of a Hunger Game.  I clicked several times but didn't get one.  Apparently, I am doomed to die.

HungerNames.com is a fantastic site for fans of The Hunger Games to amuse themselves for a minute or two.

Hopefully you end up with a cooler name than Toodles Pickerdod.  I mean, Toodles?  Really?

The Hunger Games: District 12

District 12 was one of the poorest, most ridiculed districts in the nation of Panem. Located in the Appalachian Mountains, District 12 specialized in coal mining.  District 12 had not won the Games for many years prior to The Hunger Games, when Haymitch Abernathy, an alcoholic and an embarrassment to the district, won the 50th Annual Games, or the second Quarter Quell.

District 12 consisted of three different areas: the merchant section, the Victors' Village, and The Seam.

Although he grew up in the merchant area of District 12, Peeta's childhood was less than desirable, as his family life was difficult. His father was kind, but his mother was known to beat Peeta and his two brothers if they made a mistake.

Ever since he was five years old, Peeta had a crush on Katniss Everdeen. On the first day of school, Peeta's father pointed out Katniss, saying that he wanted to marry her mother, but ultimately she married a coal miner. Peeta was confused why someone would marry a coal miner instead of his father, but Mr. Mellark explained that when Mr. Everdeen sang, the birds stopped to listen. Later, Katniss sang for their music class, and Peeta realized he was in love with her when he saw that the birds were listening. The two never spoke until the 74th Hunger Games.

Peeta has a very likable personality. Peeta is bold, having announced that he was in love with Katniss to the whole nation; smart, figuring out strategies to use in the Games; and willing to go to extremes to keep Katniss alive. However, in the first book, Peeta told Katniss that he did not expect he would win. He is a great public speaker and is very brave. Peeta is also loving and cares about the people around him, and hates killing unless the pursuer is a threat to himself or Katniss; selfless, for sacrificing his own life for Katniss'; funny, for making those around him laugh even when times were tough; and he always knows exactly what to say to make you feel better and to cheer you up. He is able to work with Haymitch on goals and strategy and unlike Katniss, he is able to keep secrets and is trusted by Haymitch. It is noted throughout the series his deep understanding of situations such as the Hunger Games where he says "I don't want to be just a piece in their Games." It took Katniss much longer for her to understand the same concept.

Peeta's main talents are baking, painting, speaking, camouflage and brute strength. His artistic talents developed from helping out at his parents' bakery by making bread and decorating cakes. His larger build and strength also gives him an advantage during hand-to-hand combat and wrestling, coming in second place in a District 12 wrestling contest. In the Games, he usually carries a knife or a sword, although he rarely uses them in battle as he is not particularly violent and dislikes killing unless it is completely necessary. The Career tributes say that "he is handy with a knife". Peeta has a lot of strength from working at the bakery; Katniss says she's seen him lift bags of flour over a hundred pounds.

"Only I keep wishing I could think of a way to... to show the Capitol they don't own me. That I'm more than just a piece in their games."
―Peeta Mellark

Katniss Everdeen was born on May 8th in District 12. She has straight, black hair, usually in a braid down her back, olive skin, and gray eyes. Katniss was close to her father and spent time hunting with him in the woods. There, he taught her about hunting, nature, and how to use a bow and arrow. Katniss's father also taught her how to swim in an small pond in the woods.

When she was 11 years old, her father died in an explosion underground in the mines where he worked, leaving her to take care of her mother and sister. Katniss related in the book that she still has nightmares about the explosion and the day her father died, five years later. She still woke up screaming for him to run and wondering if he would ever come back to her. She resents her mother for succumbing to the depression caused by her husband's death, which left her unable to care for Katniss and her sister, Primrose Everdeen. Even years after her father's death, Katniss didn't forgive her for sinking into depression and leaving her and Prim alone to fend for themselves so young. The district gave a small amount of money to Katniss's family, allowing for a month grieving period before her mother was expected to get a job. When her mother did not get a job, Katniss was thrust into the role of provider and nurturer. She took on this role to avoid allowing her mother to be deemed an unfit mother, which would send herself and Prim to the community home.

A few weeks before May 8th, when Katniss would be able to sign up for tesserae, her family was already starving and she had succumbed to picking from trash cans. One night, when it was raining, she was yelled at by the Baker's wife for looking in their trashcan, even though it was empty. Seeing this, the Baker's son, Peeta Mellark, burned two loaves of bread, earning a beating from his mother. When he went outside with the pretense of feeding the burnt loaves to the pigs, he tossed them to Katniss instead and hurried back inside. The following day at school, Katniss caught Peeta watching her and quickly dropped her gaze, which landed on the first dandelion of the year. The sight of the dandelion made her think of the hours spent in the woods with her father, and she started utilizing the skills her father had taught her to find food and trade. She increased her hunting and foraging skills, selling the illegal food at The Hob, the local Black Market where she made most of her living. Katniss could never shake the connection between Peeta Mellark, the bread that gave her hope, and the dandelion that reminded her that she was not doomed.

During her period of hunting alone, when she was twelve, Katniss met Gale Hawthorne after stumbling across his snares, which had caught a rabbit. At first, he thought that she was going to steal the snares, but after initial coldness, the two became hunting partners and shared their knowledge with one another; Gale teaching Katniss to tie snares, and Katniss sharing her father's herbological knowledge, as well as archery. Katniss eventually gives Gales a bow. Together, the two would trade at the Hob, although their illegal transactions were overlooked by the Peacekeepers who along with Katniss' family, lived off of her haul. The trust between Gale and Katniss grew to a point where they became extremely close friends and knew each other in and out. They became well known in the Hob and in town for selling freshly hunted meat and wild fruits to everyone from the Peacekeepers to the Mayor to the stores in the Hob.

In addition to hunting and foraging, Katniss signed up for tesserae for each of her family members on her birthday each year, providing them with grain and oil. Katniss's underlying motive for doing this was to ensure that Prim would only have her name in the Reaping ball once when the tribute selection for the 74th Hunger Games was to be held.

The Hunger Games: District 11

District 11 is one of the poorer districts, right after District 12 in the nation of Panem. Their job is agriculture; orchards, fields of grain, and cotton surround the district. Almost everything they grow goes to the Capitol.

District 11 specializes in agriculture, growing wheat and managing orchards. Rue stated that there are many tracker jacker nests in District 11, leading workers to keep medical leaves on hand. In the orchards small children are sent to high branches to pick the highest fruits. Sometimes during harvest they are given night-vision goggles to allow them to work after dark. Due to the nature of their work, children do have an advantage in the games, as the people of District 11 have a high amount of knowledge of herbs. They work all day; from sunrise to sunset, the people work the fields to send food off to the Capitol. They hardly keep any for themselves. District 11 is many times larger than District 12.

The citizens of District 11 are housed in small shacks. The people of this district are described as having "dark hair and dark skin". Due to this, they may be of African-American, Latin American, Native American, or South Asian decent. However, due to the location of District 11 being confirmed by Suzanne Collins as "the Deep South" (the Justice Building likely being located in what is now Atlanta, GA) it is most commonly assumed that the citizenry of District 11 is overwhelmingly of African-American descent and that the treatment of these citizens is a parallel to antebellum United States slavery (the citizens of District 11 are not allowed surnames, work long hours unpaid in fields and orchards, and are rationed food much more sparingly than in other Districts).

Peeta also noted that the signature bread from this district is a crescent moon shaped roll dotted with seeds.

In District 11, the names, at least of the characters we meet, are all names for some kind of grain.

"This bread came from District 11. I cautiously lift the still warm loaf. What must it have cost the people of District 11 who can't even feed themselves?"
―Katniss

Thresh was reaped for the 74th Hunger Games along with the female tribute from his district, Rue.

During the training sessions, Thresh was confronted and asked to be part of the Career pack but he refused.

During Thresh's interview before the games, Caesar Flickerman tries to help him to be more comfortable and talk. However, Thresh only answers in curt single word answers and remains surly. Katniss is extremely impressed with this, and envied Thresh as he showed such silent, deadly physical power and had no need to make the Capitol like him with an angle.

In the Games, it is highly unlikely that he participated in the bloodbath on day one. He left the Cornucopia and found a field of wheat, which he uses to his advantage by using the wheat for food and also as a source of cover so he could easily hide. The Careers knew where he was, but saw the field as a threat as Thresh would be at a major advantage if they attacked, so they avoided him.

"Just this one time, I let you go. For the little girl. You and me, we're even then. No more owed. You understand?"
―Thresh, to Katniss

Rue was the smallest and youngest female tribute from District 11 who was selected to participate in the 74th Annual Hunger Games. She is described as being small and easily underestimated by other competitors. Rue died in the 74th Hunger Games at the age of 12 when Marvel thrust a spear in her stomach. She had formed an alliance with Katniss Everdeen after warning her about a nest of tracker jackers. Rue decided to trust Katniss only because of the pin she wore over her heart, the famous mockingjay pin. As a memorial of Rue's death, Katniss covered her in flowers and sang to her, indicating to the Capitol that Rue was not just a piece in their games.

Rue and Thresh are described in the book as having dark skin and brown hair. Rue worked with great effort in the orchards in District 11. She would always work from sunrise to sunset, alongside the other citizens of her district. Rue was the oldest child in her family. Despite her size, she was able to jump from tree to tree in the orchards. Her considerable agility and skill at traveling through the tree tops are probably the reason she earned a good score after the private training sessions preceding the 74th Hunger Games (later, Katniss thinks her score was much too low). This ability, and her small stature, made her able to climb the tallest trees in District 11, allowing her to see the flag signaling quitting time first and sing her four note song when work was over. This tune was picked up by the mockingjays in the area, which spread the message through the orchards, letting the others know that the working day was over. Rue claimed that these mockingjays were her special friends.

"I'm very hard to catch. And if they can't catch me, they can't kill me. So don't count me out."
―Rue

The Hunger Games: District 7 & 8

District 7 is one of the districts of the nation Panem. District Seven provides lumber for the Capitol, and the tributes of District 7 are known to be good with axes. District 7 is apparently covered in large portions of pine forest as Johanna Mason comments that pine needles "smell like home."

District 8's principal industry is the production of textiles and clothing. They have at least one factory that is primarily used for making Peacekeeper uniforms. Incomes in District 8 must be fairly low as Twill mentions that she puts in a four hour shift in a Peacekeeper Uniform factory after her full time job as a teacher. Bonnie, a child, also mentions putting in a four hour shift after she gets out of school. District 8 must also be in a cold place because Twill mentions the factory she works in as cold. On page 142 of Catching Fire, Katniss describes District 8 "as an ugly, urban place stinking of industrial fumes, the people housed in run down tenaments, barely a blade of grass in sight".

According to the official Hunger Games movie website (thecapitol.pn), the following jobs are offered in District 8:
  • Teacher
  • Factory worker
  • Weaver
  • Dress maker
  • Designer
  • Warehouse manager

The Hunger Games: District 5 & 6

District 5 is one of the twelve districts of the country Panem. Though never mentioned in the books, according to the official movie promotional page, this district's industry is power and electricity. Therefore, this district is responsibly for generating the power of the entire nation.

Judging from the information on the official Hunger Games movie promotional site, District 5 has a low number of children claiming tesserae**. Therefore, District 5 may be possibly not as impoverished as many other districts of Panem. District 5 is shown as having the third lowest number of tesserae-claiming children, following District 1 and District 2. Another reason for the low number of tesserae claims could be that the population is small in comparison with the other districts.

**Tessera (plural: tesserae) is an option available to children in the districts of Panem, who are eligible to participate in the Hunger Games. If their family is starving, they can add their name into the reaping draw more times in exchange for tesserae. Each tessera is worth a very meager year's supply of grain and oil for one person. However, this is not enough to survive by for a year as money for rent, soap, thread and candles are needed. The entries are cumulative

Known by no other name, this red-head from District 5 is wily and elusive. Though she doesn't have brute strength or knowledge of weapons, she can outsmart everyone in the arena.

District 6 is one of the 12 districts of Panem. Though never mentioned in the books, according to the official movie promotional page "Capitol.Pn", this district's principal industry is transportation. It was heavily bombed by the Capitol's Air Forces during the Second Rebellion. District 6 is also known to be very unstable, and could be several times larger than even Districts 11 or 2. Some of the citizens in District 6 are morphling addicts.
