In the icy, monster-plagued world of the Frost, one wrong move and a person could end up dead—and Lia Weaver knows this better than anyone. After monsters kill her parents, she must keep the family farm running despite the freezing cold and threat of monster attacks or risk losing her siblings to reassignment by the village Elders. With dangers on all sides and failure just one wrong step away, she can’t afford to let her emotions lead her astray. So when her sister finds a fugitive bleeding to death in the forest—a young stranger named Gabe—Lia surprises herself and does the unthinkable.

She saves his life.

Giving shelter to the fugitive could get her in trouble. The Elders have always described the advanced society of people beyond the Frost, the “Farthers,” as ruthless and cruel. But Lia is startled to find that Gabe is empathetic and intelligent…and handsome. She might even be falling in love with him.

But time is running out. The monsters from the forest circle the farm at night. The village leader is starting to ask questions. Farther soldiers are searching for Gabe. Lia must locate a secret organization called the Thorns to help Gabe escape to safety, but every move she makes puts her in more danger.

Is compassion—and love—worth the risk?

Lia lives in the frost with her siblings, Ivy and John.  They are the Weavers, the ones who make yarn to meet their quota in the community.  Everybody has to make things to meet quotas for the benefit of everyone.  The Weavers have been orphaned since their parents were killed by the Watchers.  The Watchers are the monsters that live in deep in the Frost. Then there are the Farthers, people who are farther than the Frost.

Everyone in the community knows that you don’t associate with the Farthers or Watchers.   What happens when Ivy finds a Farther in the forest who is hurt?  Does Ivy and Lia help him like their first instincts are, or do they do what the community has taught them?

When I first started Frost, I thought that it would be an interesting story because the synopsis was different.  I was blown away by how quickly I read the book.  I was really excited when I found out that there would be a sequel, Thorns.   I liked the pace of the book.  It is considered a short book by page numbers, but I feel that it is not lacking any information.  I liked how you got enough information but it didn’t feel like information overload.

I really like how Lia is the main provider for her brother John and sister Ivy after her parents’ death.   Lia is a strong person who has to think twice about what to do with the Farther that they found in the forest.  The only reason she is second guessing herself is because she doesn’t want to “mess up” or they would take her siblings away and put them with other families in the community.    Living in the last farm in the community, it is sometimes hard for Lia to make it to all the required meetings.

What happens with the Farther they found and how will that impact Lia, John and Ivy’s lives?
